It's time for Modern Atlanta Dance Festival 2014!

The 20th annual Modern Atlanta Dance (MAD) Festival takes the stage at the Balzer Theater at Herren’s (84 Luckie Street, NW, Atlanta, GA 30303) for two nights of exceptional dance. Designed by Douglas Scott and Full Radius Dance to showcase the diversity and excellence of the local dance scene, the MAD Festival strives to present the best of Georgia’s modern/contemporary dance, allowing audiences to experience a variety of choreographers, techniques and artistic visions in a single evening. In performance will be host company Full Radius Dance, SWADanceCollective, Project 7 Contemporary Dance and Atlanta Dance Connection, and independent choreographers Christen S. Weimer, Emily Cargill, and Anicka Austin.

This busy, growing dance and music school seeks a detailed oriented candidate to work closely with the Owner/Artistic Director to serve a diverse student population while providing excellent customer service.  This arts administration position combines front desk and back office duties, utilizing contemporary software and technology. The ideal candidate values a charming, relaxed albeit hard-working environment.

 

Regular Job Hours: Monday-Thursday 3p-9p/Saturday, 8:30a-4:00p

 

Tasks include, but are not limited to:

Registration of new students, receiving and tracking payments, maintaining class roster and student database, scheduling lessons for adults and children, supporting teachers, creating and implementing marketing strategies, light housekeeping duties, maintaining social media contacts and answering phones while providing class and lesson information

 

Desired Competencies:

Customer Service experience, technological expertise, excellent written and spoken English, proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel), experience with social media platforms (Facebook, twitter, YouTube etc.), experience with digital media (mp3, DVD, CD, mp4 etc.). Creative Design skills are a definite plus!

 

A successful candidate will be punctual, task-driven and pro-active. He/she will have excellent follow-through and be self-motivated to contribute to successful outcomes.

DCA is WonderRoot's monthly showcase of fresh work by 3 local dance-makers that concludes in a casual talk-back led by a guest moderator (every 1st Saturday). Artists vie for selection by dropping their name into the bowl the evening of a showcase. 3 artists and 1 alternate are drawn from the bowl. They then have approximately one month to create, revision or re-format up to 15 minutes of choreography for the next month’s Dance Chance.

A contemporary dance performance exploring notions of style, robotics, and automated behavior presented in partial fulfillment of dancer and choreographer Amy LaViers' PhD dissertation in Electrical and Computer Engineering at GA Tech.  The work will feature local artists Alex Abarca, Helen Hale, Camille Jackson, and Erik Thurmond and a humanoid robot. Thinking About Social Change

February may be a short little month but it packs in the action like a month with many days.  It boasts hearty outreach, acts of empowerment, and community education. Oh- and let's not forget the ever important Valentine's Day.  But aside from that lovely day, it would be hard not to observe organizations that are using dance to lead the way for social change.  On February 14,  organizations like V-Day and Idle No More will use their dance voices to bring attention to issues regarding violence against women and the environment, respectively. 

Atlanta's very own Moving in the Spirit is one of these gems of February.  On February 23 and 24, 2013 their Men in Motion troupe will celebrate its tenth anniversary with three performances. Men in Motion was created ten years ago with the purpose of providing boys ages 8-13 with an alternative to street life and a path to achievement. These shows, comprised of contemporary dance and hip hop, will display just how Moving in the Spirit's nationally recognized youth development program is brilliant, beautiful, and behemoth.

It's vital to take a break from creating choreography, searching for inspiration, and discussing the challenges of this thing we call 'dance' to acknowledge those giving back in a deep and significant way, right?
