“Embodied Virtuosity: Dances from Disability Culture” A performance and academic presentation

“Embodied Virtuosity: Dances from Disability Culture”

A performance and academic presentation
by ALICE SHEPPARD

Internationally acclaimed contemporary dancer, Alice Sheppard, will perform two solo dances, accompanied by her lecture presenting the development, history, and theory of disability dance. Sheppard calls into question what we mean by virtuosity when we talk about disabled dancers and dance.
Instead of assessing the dancer's body, she considers the importance of beauty, disability history, and the world of disability arts and culture.
This event will be videotaped and will have CART, which is real-time captioning for accessibility. Also, in vivo, verbal descriptions of her movements will be available upon request.

Date: MARCH 23, 2014  @ 2PM

Location: Dance Studio
Schwartz Center for Creativity & Arts
1700 N Decatur Road
Atlanta, GA 30322
